Journal

Notes from the studio.

Three or four times a year, when something is worth writing down: what we have been drawing, how the shop does things, and the questions we are asked often enough to answer properly.

Most of what gets written here starts on a walk, which is also where most of the references do.

What we have been thinking about

Written by whichever of us had something to say. No schedule, no newsletter, no posting for the sake of it.

Why we draw from pressed plants and not from Pinterest

A saved image is already somebody's drawing of somebody's photograph of a plant. Press the thing itself and you get the bits that make it recognisable — the kink in a stem, the way an umbel never quite sits flat — which is exactly what a tattoo of it needs to keep.

Solid black is slow, and skin decides how slow on the day. Here is how two sessions, eleven hours and a day rate add up — and why the number we give you at the consultation has a top and a bottom to it.

First tattoo at forty: the three questions we hear most

Will it hurt more than it would have at twenty, what happens if I change my mind in the chair, and can I bring my sister. Short answers: a bit, we stop, and yes — bring her.

There is no newsletter, and there will not be one

We are two people with one chair between us. Anything genuinely worth telling you — a cancellation, a month where the book opens, a change to the deposit policy — goes on this page and nowhere else.

— Cancellations are offered to people already waiting, in the order they asked.
— The book opens for the next quarter in the first week of January, April, July and October.
— Everything else worth knowing is answered better in a consultation than in writing.

Rather talk than read?

The free half hour covers more ground than any of these notes, and you get to ask the awkward questions out loud.
